Why Did My Take Profit Close at a Loss, or My Stop Loss Lose More Than I Set?
Simple TP/SL executes as a Market order once triggered. In fast or thinly traded markets, the fill can land well away from your trigger price, so a Take Profit can close at a worse price, even a loss, and a Stop Loss can lose more than planned. To control the exit price, use Advanced TP/SL with a Limit leg.
| Symptom / Condition | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Your Take Profit closed at a worse price than you set, or even at a loss. | Simple TP/SL executes as a Market order once triggered. In a fast or thinly traded market, the best available price on the order book can be well away from your trigger price. This gap is called slippage. | Use Advanced TP/SL and turn on Limit execution for the Take Profit leg. It then fills only at your limit price or better. |
| Your Stop Loss lost more than you planned. | The same slippage. A triggered Simple Stop Loss closes at the best available price, which can be worse than your Stop Loss price when the market moves fast. | Use a Limit leg for the Stop Loss if price control matters more to you than a quick exit. A Limit Stop Loss may not fill if the market moves past your limit, and your position then stays open. |
| Your Stop Loss triggered before the chart reached your Stop Loss price. | Stop Loss triggers on the mark price, which can differ from the last price shown on the chart. | This is expected, not an error. See CFT-TXN-TS-003. |
| Your Realised P&L is lower than the estimated P&L you saw when setting TP/SL. | The estimated P&L shown when you set TP/SL excludes fees. Trading fees are deducted when the order executes, and funding payments made while the position was open are also recorded in Realised P&L. | Check the fee breakdown and your Realised P&L to see each amount. Allow for fees when you choose your TP/SL prices. |
| Your Limit TP/SL triggered but didn't fill. | The market moved past your limit price. A Limit leg only fills at your limit price or better. | The order stays open (GTC) until it fills, you cancel it, or the position closes. See CFT-FEAT-TS-001. |
If the issue persists:
If a TP/SL filled at a price you can't explain, contact Pluang Care via live chat in the app or email tanya@pluang.com with the contract name, the order details and the approximate time it executed.
Related questions:
Q: Does a Limit TP/SL guarantee my price?
It guarantees you won't fill at a worse price than your limit, but not that the order fills. If the market moves past your limit, the order stays open until it fills, you cancel it, or the position closes.
Q: Is a Limit Stop Loss risky?
It can be. If the market moves past your limit price, the Stop Loss may not fill, and your position stays open while the loss can keep growing. Keep Market execution if exiting quickly matters more to you.
Q: Why did my Stop Loss trigger before the chart reached it?
Stop Loss triggers on the mark price, not the last price shown on the chart. The two usually move together but can briefly drift apart.
Q: Which fee applies when my Simple TP/SL executes?
A triggered Simple TP/SL fills immediately against the order book, so it is charged the taker fee. Check the fee breakdown in the app for the current rates.
