What Do Equity, Free Margin and Position Margin Mean in Commodities?
In your USD Margin (Commodities) wallet, "Equity" is your balance plus the unrealized profit and loss of your open positions, "Position Margin" is the margin your open positions are using, and "Free Margin" is the part of your equity that isn't already used as margin, which is what's left for new positions. Your margin level is your equity divided by your used margin. Unrealized profit counts toward Equity, but it can't be moved out until the position is closed.
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Equity" | Your balance plus the unrealized profit and loss (Unrealized P&L) of your open positions. It moves with the price. |
| "Position Margin" | The margin your open positions are using. It's part of your own balance, set aside to back those positions; it isn't a fee. |
| "Order Margin" | Margin linked to orders that haven't filled yet, if you have any. |
| "Free Margin" | The part of your equity that isn't already used as margin: what's left for new positions. |
| "Margin Level" | Equity ÷ used margin × 100%, calculated across the whole wallet. |
| "Maintenance Margin" | The 80% margin level. If your margin level falls to it, you get a margin call. |
| "Withdrawable Cash" and "Available to Transfer" | What you can move out of the wallet, to USD Cash or to your Rupiah balance. Margin used by your open positions isn't included, and unrealized profit can't be moved until the position is closed. |
- Cross margin: These figures cover all your open Commodities positions in the wallet together. A loss on one position lowers your Equity, your Free Margin and your margin level for all of them.
- Margin levels: A margin call comes at an 80% margin level, the Maintenance Margin. It's the first warning. At 70% you get a second warning, and new orders that add risk are blocked until your margin level is back above 80%. At 50%, Pluang closes your worst-performing position in full, then checks your margin level again. If it's still at 50% or below, it closes the next one. Keep an eye on your margin level in the app. Pluang also sends alerts by email and push notification.
- Illustrative example: You deposit US$100 and open 1 lot of gold (XAUUSD) Long at US$4,300. The margin used is about US$43.00 (US$4,300 exposure ÷ 100x leverage), and opening fees of about US$0.11 leave a balance of US$99.89. Ignoring the spread and swap, just after opening your Equity is about US$99.89, your Position Margin about US$43.00, your Free Margin about US$56.89 and your margin level about 232%. If gold falls to about US$4,234.51, your Equity drops to about US$34.40 and your margin level to 80%, and you get a margin call. Prices are illustrative, not live quotes, and the order page shows the exact Est. Margin Required, which can be slightly higher than this simple calculation.
- Moving funds out: You can move funds to USD Cash or to your Rupiah balance, up to the amount the app shows as "Available to Transfer". When you close a position, its realized profit or loss is credited to your wallet balance.
- Separate from USD Margin: These figures belong to USD Margin (Commodities) only. USD Margin, the wallet for leveraged US Stocks, is a separate wallet, and a loss in one never affects the other.
Related questions:
Q: Is Free Margin the same as the amount I can move out?
No. Free Margin is worked out from your Equity, which includes unrealized profit and loss, and shows what's left for new positions. The amount you can move out is shown as "Available to Transfer": margin used by your open positions isn't available, and unrealized profit can't be moved until you close the position. So the two figures can differ. Once a position is closed, its realized profit is credited to your balance.
Q: Why does my Equity change when I haven't placed a trade?
Because Equity includes the unrealized profit and loss of your open positions, so it moves with the price. A swap charged or credited at the daily rollover, at 05.00 WIB (04.00 WIB during US Daylight Saving Time), also changes your balance and so your Equity. When Equity falls, your Free Margin and your margin level fall with it.
Q: What does "Maintenance Margin" mean?
It's the 80% margin level. If your margin level falls to it, you reach a margin call, the first warning, and Pluang sends an alert by email and push notification. Your positions stay open: add funds, or reduce or close positions. If your margin level keeps falling, a second warning comes at 70%, when new orders that add risk are blocked until it's back above 80%, and liquidation at 50%.
Q: How can I raise my margin level?
Add funds, or reduce or close positions. To add funds, move USD into USD Margin (Commodities) from USD Cash, or convert from your Rupiah balance; more equity raises your margin level. Reducing or closing positions lowers your used margin, although the loss on the lots you close becomes realized.
