What Is a Bonding Period, and Why Does It Exist?

A bonding period is the mandatory waiting phase in crypto staking that begins after you submit a staking request, during which your coins are being delegated to a blockchain validator but are not yet earning staking rewards. The bonding period is set by the blockchain network itself, not by Pluang, so it cannot be shortened, and its length varies by coin. On Pluang, your coins move to Bonding In-Progress status once your request is processed in the daily batch that runs at 9AM WIB, and they stay locked — unavailable for trading or withdrawal — throughout the phase. No rewards accrue during bonding; once the network finishes, your status changes to Staking Active and reward accrual begins.

Good to know:

  • What triggers Bonding In-Progress: your coins enter bonding once the daily 9AM WIB batch picks up your request; before that they sit in Staking Requested — the only cancellable window.
  • Locked and earning nothing: during bonding your coins cannot be traded or withdrawn, and no rewards accrue until the stake is fully active.
  • Why the network requires it: the lock-up ensures validators genuinely commit their stake before validating transactions — a network-level security mechanism, not a Pluang policy.
  • Pluang cannot shorten it: the duration is enforced by the blockchain, so no app or exchange can speed it up.
  • Length varies by coin: ETH, SOL, and ATOM can each differ — check the staking detail page in the app for the specific duration.
  • Plan for the lock-up: only stake coins you won't need to trade or withdraw soon, since they are illiquid during bonding and again during unbonding.

Related questions:

Q: Do I earn rewards during the bonding period?
No. Rewards only begin accruing once your status changes to Staking Active, after the network completes bonding. During bonding, coins are committed and locked but do not yet count toward validation, so nothing accrues.

Q: Can I cancel my staking request while coins are in the bonding period?
No. Once status is Bonding In-Progress, cancellation is not possible. You can cancel only while still in Staking Requested — before the next day's 9AM WIB batch runs.

Q: How do I know when bonding is complete?
Your status in the app changes from Bonding In-Progress to Staking Active. Track it under the staking section of your portfolio; reward accrual starts the moment status becomes Staking Active.

Q: Is the bonding period the same for all coins?
No. Each blockchain sets its own bonding period, so ETH, SOL, and ATOM can differ. Check the staking detail page in the app for the specific bonding period per coin.

Q: Why can't Pluang make bonding faster?
Because it is enforced by the blockchain protocol itself — a built-in proof-of-stake security rule. No app or intermediary can override it; the same waiting time applies to everyone staking that coin.
