Should a Beginner Start With US ETFs or Individual US Stocks on Pluang?

Many beginners on Pluang start with a broad-market US ETF, because one purchase spreads money across hundreds of companies, while an individual stock depends on one company's results. US Stocks and ETFs on Pluang are facilitated by PT PG Berjangka, a Financial Derivatives Trading Intermediary for derivative products with securities as the underlying asset, licensed and supervised by OJK. Neither is free of risk, and the right mix depends on your goals and how much risk you can take.

Some investors build a core of broad-market ETFs first and add individual stocks they understand well later. Sector, thematic and leveraged ETFs are narrower and usually swing more, so they behave less like a broad-market fund than their name might suggest.

Whatever you choose, US ETFs and US stocks on Pluang are priced in US dollars, so their rupiah value also moves with the IDR–USD exchange rate. This is general information, not a personal recommendation.

Related questions:

Q: How much do I need to start with US ETFs on Pluang?
US$1 for a Market Order or US$1.50 for a Limit Order. Fractional units are supported on DAY orders, so you don't need the price of a whole unit.

Q: Can a broad-market ETF lose money?
Yes. A broad-market ETF spreads risk across many companies, but it falls when the market as a whole falls. Past performance does not guarantee future results.

Q: Can I hold both ETFs and individual stocks?
Yes. Both sit in the US Stocks section of the same Pluang account, so you can combine them in one portfolio.

Q: Are leveraged ETFs suitable for a first investment?
They work differently. A leveraged or inverse ETF aims for a multiple of an index's daily move, so over longer periods its return can differ a lot from the index. Learn how they work before buying one.
