FAQ article

What is Daily P&L on Pluang and why does it reset every day?

Daily P&L on Pluang shows only today's gain or loss on a position: the units you hold multiplied by the difference between the current price and yesterday's closing price. On a US Stocks asset page, it appears in the position section as Daily P&L (Laba Rugi Harian), and it resets at 00:00 WIB, when a new day's calculation begins. Because it compares today's price with yesterday's close, it ignores everything that happened before today, including the price you originally paid. That makes it different from unrealised profit or loss, which covers the whole time you've held the position and is measured against your average buy price. A stock can therefore show a Daily P&L loss while your overall unrealised result is still a profit, or the other way round. Daily P&L is a snapshot of today's movement, not a record of what you've made or lost on the investment as a whole, and it doesn't lock anything in.

Formula: Daily P&L = units held × (current price − yesterday's closing price)

Worked example (simplified)

You hold 10 shares with an average buy price of US$80. Yesterday's closing price was US$100, and today the price is US$97.

  • Daily P&L: 10 × (US$97 − US$100) = −US$30
  • Unrealised profit or loss: 10 × (US$97 − US$80) = +US$170 (using the mid price in practice)

Today the stock is down, but your position as a whole is still in profit.

  • Where to find it. Open the US stock in your portfolio; Daily P&L sits in the position section with your units, Portfolio Value, average purchase price and unrealised profit or loss.
  • Mutual funds move once a day. A mutual fund's value changes only when its new NAV is published, between 21:00 and 24:00 WIB, so its daily movement appears then rather than throughout the day.

Related questions:

Q: Why does my Daily P&L go back to zero?
Because it resets every day at 00:00 WIB. Daily P&L only measures movement since yesterday's closing price, so when a new day starts, the comparison starts again from the latest close. Nothing is lost when it resets: your holdings, your average buy price and your unrealised profit or loss are unchanged. Only the one-day snapshot starts over, which lets you see each day's movement on its own.

Q: Why is my Daily P&L negative when my position is in profit?
Because the two figures answer different questions. Daily P&L compares today's price with yesterday's close, so it turns negative on any day the price falls, even slightly. Unrealised profit or loss compares the current price with your average buy price, so it stays positive as long as the price is still above what you paid on average. A dip today doesn't undo earlier gains; it only reduces them by today's movement.

Q: Does Daily P&L include the exchange rate?
Daily P&L on a US stock is based on the share price, which is quoted in US dollars, so it measures the stock's own daily movement. If you look at your holdings in Rupiah, the Rupiah figures also move with the USD–IDR exchange rate, which the portfolio summary shows separately as Foreign Exchange Difference. To see a stock's daily performance without any currency effect, keep the view in USD.

Q: Is Daily P&L added to my realised profit and loss?
No. Daily P&L is a view of today's price movement on positions you still hold, so it is part of the unrealised picture and nothing is locked in. Profit or loss becomes realised only when you sell or close a position, and it is then calculated from the price your order filled at against your average buy price. Adding up a series of Daily P&L figures won't necessarily match your realised result, because the prices involved differ.
