FAQ article

What happens to my TP/SL if I increase my Crypto Futures position size?

Your existing TP/SL order does not adjust automatically when you increase your position size — it stays active for the original amount only, covering just the portion of the position that existed when you created it, so you need to create a new TP/SL order to cover the added portion of your position. This is a deliberate design choice: Pluang has no way to know whether you want your original exit level to also apply to the newly added size, so it leaves the existing order untouched rather than silently resizing it on your behalf. In practice, this means every time you add to a position that already has a TP or SL attached, you should treat the added portion as unprotected until you place a fresh order sized to your new total position, otherwise part of your exposure will be sitting without an exit plan.

  • Example:
  • 1. You open a long position of 1 BTCUSDT at 80,000 USDT and place TP 1: sell 1 BTCUSDT at 85,000 USDT.
  • 2. You then open a new long position of 2 BTCUSDT at 82,000 USDT. TP 1 remains active, but only covers the original 1 BTCUSDT — the additional 2 BTCUSDT has no TP protecting it yet.
  • 3. Your total position is now 3 BTCUSDT. With the updated position size, you can place a new order — for example, TP 2: sell 3 BTCUSDT at 90,000 USDT — to cover the full position, or simply add a second TP sized to the 2 BTCUSDT you just added.
  • Because TP/SL amounts don't auto-recalculate on position increases, always review and add or adjust your TP/SL after adding to a position, or your added size will be left unprotected until you act on it manually.

Related questions:

Q: Will my Stop Loss also stay at the old amount if I add to my position?
Yes — the same rule applies to SL; an existing SL order does not scale up automatically when you increase your position size, so the newly added portion of your position carries no downside protection until you place a new SL sized to cover it.

Q: Do I need to cancel my old TP/SL before creating a new one?
No — you can leave the existing order active for its original amount and add a new order to cover the additional position size; Pluang supports multiple TP/SL orders on the same position, so stacking them is the normal approach here.

Q: Does this also apply when I amend my parent order's price?
Yes — TP/SL prices do not auto-recalculate when you amend a parent order's price either; the TP/SL you already placed stays exactly where you set it, so update it manually if the new entry price changes your intended exit levels.

Q: What if I forget to add a new TP/SL after increasing my position?
The added portion simply trades without a TP or SL until you set one — Pluang won't warn you automatically, so it's worth building a habit of checking your open orders every time you scale into a position.
