Dutch regulator fines Uber €825M for automated driver account deactivations without human review

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber €825 million for deactivating driver accounts using an automated system without adequate human oversight, marking the second largest penalty under the EU's GDPR. The regulator found Uber committed serious violations by allowing a computer to make impactful decisions on driver suspensions, some of which were permanent without human review. Uber disputes these claims, stating most suspensions are temporary and reviewed by humans, and plans to appeal the fine. This fine follows previous penalties against Uber related to driver data handling, and a class action lawsuit by drivers is being prepared to seek compensation.
