New research by Robert Half reveals that while 76% of U.S. small business leaders are optimistic about hiring in 2026, 54% say AI-generated job applications have made hiring more difficult due to challenges in authenticating candidates. Only 12% report having the talent needed for key projects, with 56% facing significant skills gaps that have widened over the past year. Many small businesses are turning to staffing firms to help verify candidate information and find specialized talent, as AI increases application volume but complicates candidate evaluation. Despite these hurdles, small businesses remain a major source of job openings across several professional fields in the U.S.
