US govt to grant $2B to quantum computing firms, IBM leads with $1B award.

The U.S. government plans to award $2 billion in grants to nine quantum computing companies, with IBM receiving the largest share of $1 billion. This funding, part of the 2022 Chips and Science Act, aims to boost American innovation in quantum technology, which promises to solve complex problems beyond current computers' capabilities. IBM will use the grant to develop a new standalone quantum wafer foundry company called Anderon in Albany, New York, to advance quantum wafer production and strengthen U.S. leadership in the quantum industry. Other recipients include GlobalFoundries, D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, Infleqtion, and startup Diraq, with shares of these companies rising sharply in premarket trading following the news.
