Ripple's David Schwartz criticizes blockchain fee hikes, calling fee revenue a poor metric for user interests.

David Schwartz, Ripple's CTO emeritus, criticized the use of fee revenue as a performance metric for blockchains, arguing it overlooks the cost burden on users who pay transaction fees. This came in response to a suggestion on social media to increase XRP Ledger transaction fees by 10 to 100 times to burn more XRP tokens. Schwartz emphasized that higher fees represent friction the blockchain fails to remove and questioned whose interests such fee increases serve, highlighting the difference between income for fee collectors and expenses for users. The proposal to raise fees is subject to consensus among XRP Ledger validators and aims to increase token burns rather than generate income for validators, balancing the trade-off between higher burns and maintaining low transaction costs to support adoption.

XRP is trading at Rp26,966 on Pluang, down 0.74% over the past day as of Oct 06, 2026 07:02 WIB.
