The open-source Tether project (zackb/tether) released version 0.2.0, enabling Linux desktops running Wayland to access iPhone texts, contacts, and app notifications over Bluetooth without extra phone apps. It works by having the Linux machine emulate a trusted Bluetooth accessory using standard profiles like MAP, PBAP, and ANCS. Users must run setup commands on Linux and grant iOS permissions for data access. While requiring BlueZ 5.86 with experimental features may limit some Linux distributions, ongoing updates focus on improving connection reliability. This tool enhances desktop-mobile integration but requires careful privacy consideration due to sensitive data access.
