Osmosis, a decentralized exchange on Cosmos, paused key operations for its synthetic Bitcoin asset (allBTC) after a double-spend exploit on the Nomic blockchain compromised nearly 40 nBTC, about 36% of allBTC's backing. The vulnerability was in Nomic's custom forwarding mechanism, not Osmosis or the IBC protocol. Osmosis froze minting, redemption, deposits, and withdrawals, and an emergency upgrade locked 22.65 BTC in the attacker's address. The recovery plan includes a governance vote to seize the frozen BTC and using the community pool to cover the shortfall, aiming to restore full collateralization. Trading continues in liquidity pools, but minting and redemptions remain suspended until the issue is resolved.
