An attacker exploited a software flaw in a bridge connecting the XRP Ledger to the tx blockchain, creating fake deposits that allowed withdrawal of nearly 200,000 XRP (about $200,000) from the bridge's reserve wallet. The bridge mistakenly registered non-existent deposits as real, issuing unbacked bridged XRP which the attacker exchanged for genuine XRP. The operator halted the bridge, fixed the vulnerability, hired blockchain forensics experts, and filed an FBI complaint. However, it remains unclear how affected holders will be compensated as the stolen XRP quickly moved through multiple addresses.
