GM to close Detroit battery plant due to lease ending, not EV strategy changes

GM is closing its Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant near Detroit because the lease on the site is ending, not due to any change in its electric vehicle strategy. The plant produced battery packs for Cadillac's Celestiq and electric drive units and battery packs for the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. GM will relocate employees and production to other facilities. Despite this closure, GM continues to invest in EV production and battery research, including new chemistries and a $900 million new facility for commercialization.

GM's closure of its Detroit battery assembly plant is noted here with Pluang's Consumer Cyclical sector market data as of Oct 21, 2026 02:31 WIB. Of 134 priced US stocks in this sector, 103 rose and 29 fell today. Notable movers include SharkNinja Inc. (SN) at USD 198.20 with a 4.90% increase and 100% buy order activity, Stitch Fix Inc. (SFIX) at USD 2.76 up 4.55%, and Chewy Inc. (CHWY) at USD 21.38 rising 4.14%.
