Ethereum abandons custom Poseidon hashes for proven cryptography, gaining support from Bitcoin pioneer Adam Back.

Ethereum has decided to stop using its custom Poseidon hash function after eight years and significant investment, returning to conventional cryptographic standards like SHA and BLAKE2s. This shift is supported by Bitcoin pioneer Adam Back, who favors well-studied, reliable cryptographic algorithms over experimental ones. Advances in binary-field mathematics have made traditional hashes more efficient for zero-knowledge systems, removing the need for custom solutions. Ethereum plans to complete this post-quantum cryptography upgrade by 2028, starting with the LeanVM virtual machine launch in 2027.
