Coinbase is proactively upgrading its security systems to protect Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies from future quantum computing risks. The company is enhancing its proprietary key management system, PQ-CoreKMS, which currently secures 99.9% of its assets, to be quantum-resistant and plans to launch an automated signing system within a year. Coinbase is also collaborating with Stanford and other industry leaders in a $15 million Bitcoin Security Consortium to fund open-source research and develop migration strategies for quantum-resistant blockchain protocols. This early action aims to prepare the entire crypto ecosystem for the eventual arrival of fault-tolerant quantum computers, which could compromise current cryptographic protections if left unaddressed.
