Big Tech halts $66B stock buybacks, shifts to funding AI with new stock sales

Alphabet and Meta Platforms, which spent $66.1 billion on stock buybacks in the first nine months of last year, have stopped buybacks this year but continue paying dividends. Alphabet has gone further by announcing $80 billion in new stock sales to fund AI infrastructure, with Berkshire Hathaway buying $10 billion worth. This marks a shift from returning cash to shareholders via buybacks to raising funds for AI investments, signaling changing priorities in Big Tech's capital allocation.

As of Nov 04, 2026 22:03 WIB, Alphabet (GOOGL) trades at USD 294.19, closer to its 52-week low of USD 273.49 than its high of USD 402.62, while Meta Platforms (META) is priced at USD 631.37, also nearer to its 52-week low of USD 525.72 than the high of USD 777.59. Despite Big Tech's shift from buybacks to funding AI, Alphabet's shares gained 5.06% and Meta's 1.66% in the past day on Pluang. Dividend yields remain low for both, at 0.31% for Alphabet and 0.34% for Meta, reflecting a focus on reinvestment over shareholder payouts currently.
