Amazon-owned Zoox voluntarily recalled 105 of its autonomous robotaxis after a software issue caused the vehicles to fail in detecting heavy smoke, leading one unoccupied vehicle to drive into an active emergency fire scene in Las Vegas. The recall follows a directive from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urging autonomous vehicle developers to address safety concerns involving first responders. Zoox reported no injuries from the incident and stated it was the only event of its kind. The company is working to improve its software amid competition from Waymo, which recently recalled nearly 3,900 vehicles over safety issues as well.
