MSCI proposes excluding non-operating firms like Strategy and Metaplanet from key stock indexes.

MSCI has launched a consultation proposing to exclude 'non-operating companies'—those with less than 50% operating assets and failing key financial ratio tests—from its Global Investable Market Indexes. This could lead to the removal of major bitcoin treasury firms Strategy and Metaplanet, as well as uranium holder Yellow Cake, from the MSCI ACWI IMI Index. The proposal aims to better define companies that primarily hold non-operating assets rather than generate value through operations. Feedback is open until September 30, with potential changes taking effect no earlier than November 2026.
