A security breach on August 22, 2026, allowed hackers to create about 14.9 billion unbacked SAND tokens on The Sandbox's Base network via a smart contract flaw. The real financial loss was around $675,000 after extracting 14.75 million SAND tokens from Ethereum. The Sandbox team quickly disabled cross-chain bridges on Base and BNB Smart Chain to contain the damage, while major Korean exchanges Upbit and Bithumb paused SAND trading. Tokens on Ethereum and Polygon remained safe, and the project plans compensation and further analysis. This incident highlights risks in multi-chain token systems and has caused a temporary price dip in SAND.
