Northrop Grumman's new Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) and Mission Extension Pods (MEPs) are advancing satellite life extension by autonomously docking and refueling satellites in orbit. Recently, an older Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) detached from an Optus satellite after over a year of service, making way for the MRV and MEPs launched in July. These technologies address the common satellite failure cause—running out of fuel—allowing satellites to operate longer and generate more revenue. This shift enables more sustainable space operations, with future plans including satellite upgrades and servicing for defense and commercial customers.
