A federal judge approved Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement in a class action lawsuit where authors accused the AI company of using pirated books to train its chatbot Claude. The case, backed by Amazon and Alphabet, is the largest known US copyright settlement involving AI training data. While some authors felt the settlement was insufficient, the judge rejected these claims and approved attorney fees of over $101 million. Some authors opted out and continue separate lawsuits against Anthropic.
