Quantum resource needs for attacking Bitcoin/Ethereum signatures drop 86% in new research.

A collaborative research project involving over 100 participants and AI agents has reduced the quantum resources required for a key arithmetic step in attacking Bitcoin and Ethereum's elliptic-curve signatures by 86%. The study focused on reversible point addition over the secp256k1 curve used in Shor’s algorithm to recover private keys. Although the work significantly lowers the resource estimate, it is not a practical attack yet, as current quantum computers cannot run the full algorithm at cryptographic scale. The findings help blockchain networks plan their transition to post-quantum cryptography, highlighting the urgency due to exposed value from reused public keys and older address formats.
