Markel inks $4.8B adverse development cover deal with Enstar to manage insurance reserve risks.

Markel Insurance has entered into an adverse development cover (ADC) reinsurance agreement with Enstar to cover $4.8 billion in reserves related to its global reinsurance and certain exited insurance lines for underwriting years 2025 and prior. Under the deal, Markel retains the first $2.6 billion of reserves and retrocedes $2.3 billion to Enstar, which provides coverage for adverse loss development above the $4.8 billion subject reserves, up to $1.2 billion. Markel will pay a $120 million risk premium and expects the transaction to have minimal impact on its underwriting results. The agreement, pending regulatory approval, aims to enhance Markel's financial flexibility and focus on its core specialty insurance business while maintaining claims control.
