Kroger invests $5B to cut prices and regain market share from Walmart and Costco by 2029.

Kroger announced a $5 billion investment through 2029 to lower prices and improve customer value, targeting lost market share to Walmart and Costco. The plan includes simpler promotions, better merchandising, updated store formats, larger loyalty programs, and corporate job cuts to fund the initiative. Kroger aims for 3-6% annual EBITDA growth and 7-11% EPS growth, relying on cost savings and buybacks. The success depends on increasing sales beyond the current 0.2% growth and expanding the new pricing to more stores in 2027.

Kroger's stock price rose sharply by 5.83% to USD 67.87, still below its 52-week high of USD 75.60 as of Oct 23, 2026 03:02 WIB on Pluang. In contrast, Walmart and Costco saw smaller gains of 2.72% and 1.92%, trading at USD 121.01 and USD 1,017.44 respectively, both also below their 52-week highs. Despite Kroger's aggressive $5 billion price-cutting plan, investor activity on Pluang shows 95% selling for Kroger compared to 94% selling for Walmart and only 15% selling for Costco, highlighting differing market sentiment among these retail giants.
