Ericsson launches ISAC system to detect and track drones using 5G networks starting 2027 pilots.

Ericsson has introduced the Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) System, which uses 5G mobile networks to detect and track low-flying drones and other moving objects even if they are not connected to the network. This technology aims to enhance security for defense, public safety, and critical infrastructure by filling detection gaps that traditional sensors cannot cover efficiently. Small-scale commercial pilots will begin in 2027, with broader deployments expected in 2028 as the system evolves towards 6G integration. The system leverages existing network infrastructure combined with AI and edge computing to provide accurate 3D tracking and situational awareness over wide areas.
