Bitcoin retires original alert system due to security risks from shared signing key

Bitcoin Core developers announced the retirement of the original alert system created by Bitcoin's founder Satoshi Nakamoto because the shared private key could no longer securely identify the sender of warnings. Introduced in 2010, the alert system allowed key holders to send warnings to users but did not control Bitcoin's operations. Over time, multiple developers held the key, making it impossible to verify the authenticity of alerts. The feature was phased out between 2016 and 2017, with final alerts sent and the private key disclosed in 2018, ending its trusted use. Meanwhile, Bitcoin SV uses a different, multi-signature alert system with broader control functions.
