Amazon funds 960MW nuclear plant in Indiana, first customer to buy power from X-energy reactors

Amazon is financing a 960-megawatt nuclear power plant in Indiana, set to be operated by American Electric Power and using 12 small modular reactors from X-energy. Amazon will be the first customer to purchase power from the plant, which will be built on a former coal plant site near Terre Haute. This deal follows Amazon's significant investment in X-energy and aims to contribute to a planned 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity in the U.S. by 2039. The project depends on X-energy's progress with its first plant in Texas, which faces regulatory challenges but is nearing construction approval.

As of Oct 20, 2026 00:11 WIB, Amazon (AMZN) trades at USD 262.41, recovering strongly with a 4.96% gain, closer to its 52-week high of USD 284.02 than its low of USD 198.79. In contrast, American Electric Power (AEP), the operator of the planned nuclear plant, is down 1.64% at USD 125.06, nearer to its 52-week low of USD 113.70 than its high of USD 138.69. This shows a divergence in market sentiment between Amazon's consumer sector strength and AEP's utilities sector caution at the time of the announcement.
