$6M stolen from Base vault after malicious borrower added to whitelist

A DeFi vault on Base lost about 1,783 wstETH, worth $6 million, after a malicious contract was added to its borrower whitelist. The vault's multisig approved two whitelist changes within one minute, allowing the attacker to borrow and withdraw the tokens. The underlying Aave protocol was not compromised; the issue was the vault's governance allowing instant borrowing without a timelock. Approximately $31.7 million remains in the vault, but no protocol has claimed responsibility, leaving depositors uncertain about accountability. The stolen funds are partly moving through a seven-day bridge to Ethereum, which may reveal the attacker's next steps.

While the Base vault incident involved a significant loss of $6 million in Aave deposit tokens, AAVE itself remains stable on Pluang, trading at Rp3.243.973 with a modest 0.92% gain as of Oct 06, 2026 02:01 WIB. The token's market cap stands at Rp50,33 trillion, supported by a balanced order activity of 54% Buy and 46% Sell. This contrasts with the vault's vulnerability, highlighting that Aave's core protocol and token market remain resilient despite the security breach in the vault's governance.
