Ethereum's active addresses drop 64% while DeFi wallets like Aave hit multi-year highs.

Ethereum's daily active addresses have declined by about 64% from January to July 2026, dropping from over 1.5 million to roughly 544,000. Despite this, DeFi protocols on Ethereum, especially lending platforms like Aave, are seeing significant growth in new wallet creation, with Aave hitting its highest daily new wallet count since October 2021. This divergence is partly due to the Fusaka upgrade, which lowered transaction fees and made DeFi participation more accessible, particularly for stablecoin transfers. While Ethereum’s overall network activity cools, the DeFi ecosystem remains resilient with total value locked steady at around $41 billion, highlighting a shift from speculative activity to more sustained financial product use.
