Solana has launched the Alpenglow upgrade on its public test network, aiming to reduce transaction finality time from about 13 seconds to 0.15 seconds. This upgrade replaces the current TowerBFT consensus with a new voting protocol called Votor, enabling faster block finalization after one or two voting rounds. The change allows exchanges, bridges, and merchants to treat payments as irreversible almost immediately, improving transaction speed without altering user experience. The upgrade requires validators to use Agave 4.3 software, with a tentative mainnet update scheduled for September 28, though the official Alpenglow launch date is not yet confirmed.
