SMBC Nikko Securities has signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Nethermind, Base, and Nyx Foundation to develop a Japan-focused decentralized finance (DeFi) gateway targeted for completion by mid-2027. The project aims to embed anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) compliance directly into Uniswap v4 liquidity pools using custom code hooks, allowing eligible Japanese investors to access DeFi products within a regulated framework. SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory engagement, while technical development and blockchain infrastructure are provided by the partners. This initiative represents a significant step toward integrating DeFi with traditional financial regulation in Japan, pending ongoing approval from Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA).
