Novo Nordisk shares drop 7% as new targets fail to ease weight-loss drug market concerns

Novo Nordisk's shares fell over 7% after the company announced long-term targets that failed to reassure investors about competition in the weight-loss drug market. The Danish drugmaker plans to launch multiple blockbuster drugs by 2030 and aims for significant pipeline sales by 2035, but concerns remain due to the upcoming loss of patent exclusivity for semaglutide, a key drug ingredient, in the early 2030s. This patent loss threatens a major part of Novo's revenue, as semaglutide accounts for about 75% of its 2026 sales. Additionally, an experimental drug, CagriSema, showed weaker trial results compared to a competitor from Eli Lilly, adding to investor worries about future growth.

Novo Nordisk's shares are trading at USD 39.61 on Pluang as of Sep 21, 2026 23:43 WIB, down 8.40% for the day and closer to their 52-week low of USD 35.29 than the high of USD 63.98. In contrast, Eli Lilly shares are much higher at USD 1,159.22, up 0.61%, and nearer to their 52-week high of USD 1,280 than their low of USD 714.59. This highlights the market's more cautious stance on Novo Nordisk amid concerns about its future growth prospects.
