Portland General Electric starts trading energy in California's new day-ahead market, aiming to save $14M annually.

Portland General Electric (PGE) has begun trading energy through the California Independent System Operator's new Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM). This market allows utilities to buy and sell energy a day in advance, potentially saving PGE customers about $14 million annually by optimizing energy supply and demand across a wider region. Participation in EDAM also enhances grid reliability and supports increased renewable energy use. PGE's move follows years of investment and regional collaboration, building on its prior success in the Western Energy Imbalance Market which has generated $377 million in benefits since 2017.

Portland General Electric's launch of day-ahead energy market operations is presented here alongside Pluang's Utilities-sector snapshot as of Oct 01, 2026 21:15 WIB: among 22 priced US utilities stocks, only 5 rose while 17 fell. Brookfield Renewable (BEP) gained 1.10% to USD 28.45 with a typical hold time of 5 days, contrasting with NextEra Energy (NEE) which declined 0.88% to USD 75.07 despite 100% buy order activity and a much longer typical hold time of 82 days. FirstEnergy Corp. (FE) also fell 0.87% to USD 42.96 with a typical hold time of 70 days.
