Scammers use fake USDT tokens to steal from Venezuelan merchants at checkout.

In Venezuela, scammers are exploiting the widespread use of USDT stablecoins by sending fake USDT tokens with zero value to merchants during checkout. These counterfeit tokens mimic real USDT contracts and appear valid in self-custody wallets, tricking merchants into accepting them as payment and losing goods worth thousands of dollars. Experts advise merchants to verify the official Tether contract address or use platforms like Binance, which only credits genuine USDT tokens, to avoid falling victim to these scams. Merchants are also urged to check the dollar balance after each transaction to confirm the payment's authenticity.

USDT trades at Rp17,689 on Pluang as of Sep 20, 2026 17:41 WIB, with a market cap of Rp3.265,38 trillion and a 24-hour trading volume of Rp1.051,21 trillion. Despite the stablecoin's large circulating supply of 183.4 billion USDT and active trading, the news highlights risks of counterfeit USDT tokens being used in Venezuela, which could undermine trust in these digital payments. On Pluang, the order activity shows 61% selling and 39% buying, with a typical hold time of 88 days, reflecting steady user engagement with USDT.
