Microsoft and OpenAI have updated their partnership to lessen their mutual dependence in the competitive AI landscape. Microsoft will continue licensing OpenAI's AI technology through 2032 but will no longer be the exclusive licensee, allowing OpenAI to work with other cloud providers. OpenAI will stop sharing revenue with Microsoft when Microsoft uses its technology but will still pay Microsoft when the tech is served via Microsoft's cloud. This change removes previous uncertainties tied to potential artificial general intelligence breakthroughs. The update comes as Elon Musk sues both companies for allegedly prioritizing commercial interests over public good, seeking over $150 billion in damages. Microsoft is also set to report quarterly earnings soon.
