American Airlines is upgrading its Boeing 777-300ER planes by increasing premium seats from 116 to 144 and eliminating first class to focus on business and premium economy travelers. The retrofit, starting November 19, aims to attract higher-spending customers and improve profitability, with all 20 planes expected to be updated by 2027. This move aligns with a broader trend among US airlines to expand premium offerings as premium travelers generate nearly half of American's revenue despite occupying about 30% of seats. The upgraded planes will also feature enhanced entertainment and free high-speed Wi-Fi for loyalty members.
