IMF confirms El Salvador used no public funds for Bitcoin buys, only private donations.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has verified that El Salvador did not use taxpayer money to purchase Bitcoin after its June 2025 loan assessment. Official documents show all Bitcoin acquisitions since then came from private donations, not government funds. The IMF also confirmed that control of the Chivo digital wallet has shifted to private sector management, with the government retaining a minority stake. El Salvador currently holds about 7,764 Bitcoin worth approximately $628 million, and pending IMF approval, it may receive $140 million in financial support next. This clears concerns about potential violations of IMF loan conditions related to Bitcoin purchases.
