IBM and Red Hat announced a program providing their AI-driven Lightwell software at no cost to over 185 leading US research universities and 100 major NGOs and think tanks. Lightwell helps identify, validate, and fix vulnerabilities in open source software without requiring access to proprietary code or data, reducing the need for disruptive upgrades. This initiative aims to strengthen the security of open source software critical to research, education, and public-interest work, allowing institutions to focus resources on their missions. Onboarding for eligible institutions begins in August 2026.
