Tether freezes 94% of Iran-linked stablecoin transactions, disputing Senate claims of lax enforcement

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company has frozen wallet addresses linked to Iran, reducing stablecoin transaction volume by 94%. This challenges Senate minority staff allegations that Tether failed to freeze illicit wallets associated with Iran. Ardoino highlighted that Tether often froze wallets weeks before official U.S. and Israeli sanctions and before Chainalysis labeled the addresses. The Senate review had found 84% of 846 Iran-linked wallets transacted primarily in Tether's USDT, prompting calls for investigation by U.S. Treasury and Justice departments.

Tether's USDT is trading at Rp18.014 on Pluang as of Oct 20, 2026 09:02 WIB, showing a slight 1-day increase of 0.07%. Despite the significant reduction in Iran-linked stablecoin volume reported, USDT maintains a strong market presence with a market cap of Rp3.300,92 trillion and a 24-hour trading volume of Rp1.014,8 trillion. The typical hold time on Pluang is 91 days, with a majority of order activity leaning towards selling at 62%.
