Quantum attack costs on Bitcoin drop over 50%, raising future security concerns.

Researchers from Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, and others have cut the quantum computing resources needed to threaten Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptography by over 50%. Their study shows a quantum circuit requiring 1,151 logical qubits and about 1.3 million Toffoli gates, with a resource score around 1.5 billion—down from Google's previous 3 billion estimate. While this does not mean Bitcoin or Ethereum can currently be cracked, it highlights the importance of preparing for quantum-resistant cryptography as hardware advances. The research involved AI-assisted coding and points to ongoing reductions in resource needs, signaling that blockchain networks may need years to transition securely.
