Higher bank deposit rates slow stablecoin growth, especially for USDC, says BIS study.

A new working paper from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) shows that rising bank deposit rates in the U.S. predict slower growth in the stablecoin market from 2019 to 2025. The effect is stronger for Circle's USDC than Tether's USDT, likely due to USDC's closer ties to U.S. users. The study suggests banks can influence stablecoin adoption through deposit pricing, which may help them retain customers. The authors also highlight regulatory considerations about whether stablecoin issuers should pay interest and hold reserves in bank deposits, a topic currently debated in Washington amid new legislation like the GENIUS Act.

While the BIS paper highlights banks' influence on stablecoin adoption, Tether's USDT remains stable on Pluang at Rp17.898 with no 1-day price change as of Oct 18, 2026 20:21 WIB. USDT's market cap of Rp3.311,44 trillion contrasts with its 24-hour trading volume of Rp661,48 trillion, showing significant liquidity compared to its circulating supply of 183.7 billion USDT. This stability and trading activity provide a backdrop to the regulatory and market dynamics discussed in the report.
