VOO and VTI ETFs overlap 85%, duplicating your investment and reducing diversification benefits.

Buying both Vanguard's VOO (S&P 500 ETF) and VTI (Total Stock Market ETF) may seem diversified, but about 85% of VTI's holdings overlap with VOO's top stocks. This duplication means investors pay fees twice for largely the same exposure, reducing the value of diversification and complicating tax situations. Instead, investors should choose one broad US market fund or add truly different assets like international or small-cap value ETFs to diversify effectively.

As of Sep 16, 2026 04:23 WIB, VOO trades near its 52-week high at USD 696.85, close to $714.90, while VTI is also near its peak at USD 373.26 against a 52-week high of $384.30. Both ETFs show similar 1-day declines around -0.36% and -0.37%, respectively. In contrast, VXUS and AVUV, which represent international and small-cap value sectors, trade lower relative to their 52-week highs, highlighting different market dynamics beyond the overlapping holdings of VOO and VTI.
