American Express fined $350M for failing to detect $13B in suspicious activity over a decade

American Express was fined $350 million by US regulators for inadequate anti-money laundering controls, including failing to detect and report about $13 billion in suspicious transactions over the past ten years. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Reserve cited issues such as insufficient resources, inexperienced staff, weak training, and gaps in internal controls, especially in the company’s credit card operations. The company did not admit or deny the findings but committed to improving compliance. The fine and related costs are not expected to impact American Express's financial outlook for 2026 and 2027.

American Express shares show a slight decline of 0.11% on Pluang, trading at USD 306.82 as of Oct 09, 2026 23:11 WIB. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of USD 384.82, with a market cap of $208.06 billion and strong buying interest at 99% of order activity.
