Moscow bans Bitcoin mining rigs until 2032 to ease power grid strain.

Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of Kursk have banned Bitcoin mining and participation in mining pools until December 31, 2032, under a government decree aimed at preserving power grid stability. The Energy Ministry introduced this year-round restriction to address power capacity shortages caused by energy-intensive crypto mining. Russia, the world's second-largest Bitcoin mining power, had legalized registered mining in 2024 but has since restricted mining in multiple regions due to rising electricity demand. This move highlights ongoing tensions between crypto mining's energy needs and regional power supply limitations, with mining currently consuming about 1 gigawatt in Moscow's power system. The ban also aligns with Russia's strategy to manage energy resources amid Western sanctions.
