Can I Switch Margin Mode on an Open Position in Crypto Futures?

No. Margin mode cannot be changed on a contract while there is any open position or open order on it. To switch between Isolated Margin and Cross Margin, you must first close every open position on that contract and cancel every pending order on it, then change the margin mode in the contract settings, and only then open a new position with the mode you want. This restriction applies per contract, not account-wide, and switching costs nothing in either direction.

Steps to switch margin mode:

  1. Close all open positions on the contract you want to change.
  2. Cancel all pending open orders on that same contract.
  3. Change the margin mode (Isolated Margin ↔ Cross Margin) in the contract settings.
  4. Open a new position using the new margin mode.

Why this restriction exists: changing mode mid-trade would force the system to recalculate collateral and Margin Level in real time on a position already exposed to the market, risking unintended exposure right when it's most vulnerable. Requiring the contract to be flat first keeps risk parameters consistent for the entire life of every position.

Related questions:

Q: What happens if I try to change margin mode while a position is open?
The system blocks the change outright. You must close every open position and cancel every open order on that specific contract before the margin mode toggle becomes available again, since the platform will not recalculate an active position's collateral mid-trade.

Q: Do I need to close positions on all contracts or just the one I want to change?
Only the positions and orders on the specific contract you want to change. Every other contract keeps its existing margin mode and open positions completely untouched, since margin mode is set per contract rather than for your whole account.

Q: Is there a fee for switching margin mode?
No. Switching between Isolated Margin and Cross Margin on a contract does not incur any fee in either direction. The only cost involved is whatever trading fees you already paid to close the existing position.

Q: Can I switch margin mode between trades without any open positions?
Yes. As soon as a contract has zero open positions and zero open orders, you can freely switch it between Isolated Margin and Cross Margin as many times as you like, matching the mode to each new trade's risk profile.
