How many types of Order Validity Period are there on the US Stock Order?

In US stock trading, there are several types of expiration periods for orders (buy/sell orders), including Good Till Market Close (DAY) and Good Till Canceled (GTC). Here are the differences:

  • Good Till Market Close (DAY)

Orders that use this expiration period will be executed from the time the order is created until the next market closes. If the order is not executed after the market closes, the order will be automatically canceled.

Example: You want to buy AAPL stock at $150/share on Monday. If when the market opens (9:30 PM - 4:00 AM WIB and 8:30 PM - 3:00 AM WIB during Daylight Saving Time) AAPL stock reaches $150 or lower, your buy order will be executed. If AAPL stock does not reach $150 before the market closes, your order will be automatically canceled and your USD balance will be returned.

*Fractional nominal is a method of purchasing shares based on the amount of money (nominal), not based on the number of shares. For example, you want to buy shares worth $0.4, not buy 1 lot or 10 shares.

  • Good Till Canceled (GTC)

Orders that use this validity period will be executed from the order is made up to 30 days (calendar) later. If your order is not executed within the 30-day period, your order will be automatically canceled. You can also cancel the order during the 30-day period.

Example: You want to buy TSLA stock at $600/share using GTC. If during the 30 days TSLA stock reaches $600, the order will be executed and your buy order on the stock will be executed. If after 30 days the price of TSLA never reaches $600, your order will be automatically canceled and your USD balance will be returned.
