The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recalled nearly 4,000 Waymo fifth-generation robotaxis due to safety concerns about the vehicles entering freeway construction zones at speed. Incidents in Phoenix and San Francisco revealed that these autonomous taxis incorrectly prioritize other hazards and fail to recognize construction zones, posing risks to safety. The recall affects all of Waymo's Jaguar vehicles using the fifth-generation Autonomous Driving System, while newer sixth-generation vehicles are not impacted. Waymo plans to fix the issue with software updates and new operational protocols to improve detection and avoidance of construction zones. This recall follows previous safety concerns involving Waymo vehicles, including driving into flooded areas and blocking emergency vehicles.
