A Consumer Reports investigation found that Uber and Lyft use AI-driven pricing to charge very different fares for nearly identical rides, with median price differences of 50%. The apps also offer fake discounts based on inflated prices to lure customers. Tests across 17 states showed prices varying widely even when rides were ordered at almost the same time and route. Both companies deny using fake discounts but admit prices change frequently. This pricing strategy has boosted their profits significantly while reducing driver pay, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in ride-hailing fares.
