Sunrun, the largest U.S. home solar and battery provider, has started a pilot program to use its customers' solar and battery systems as distributed AI compute nodes. This initiative leverages Sunrun's existing energy infrastructure and over 1.1 million customers to offer AI inference computing closer to energy sources, which is faster and more scalable than traditional data centers. Homeowners hosting compute nodes are compensated, and the pilot aims to test performance and commercial viability before a broader rollout. This move could create a new revenue stream while enhancing grid resilience and customer value.
